Imodium’s Dunny Boy came to the rescue of a woman suffering, —not only from Sydney’s transport system, —but indigestion. With direction from Kimble Rendall and animation from Postmodern’s talented 3D department we completed pre-visualization of this cute protagonist, “Dunny Boy”. In creating the stylised animated hero in pre-production and determining the timing of each shot before shooting, adopting a features process method well known to Kimble and to Postmodern’s VFX Supervisor James Rogers. “Previz is a very important tool, particularly when selling to an agency”, says Kimble, “It’s is a tool that James and I, having a similar background in features, used to communicate.” Because of the rigorous pre-production work done before the shoot, there were no nasty surprises by the time Dunny Boy made it to post-production, “it all went to plan, and ended up pretty close to the animated version we worked out in pre-production” says Kimble.

Macquarie Bank’s new campaign was a simple job using a combination of 3D boxes, compositing design elements that were reflected into the box shape designs, and ensuring they were placed in shot in a photo-real manner.

Postmodern has also recently completed McDonald's ‘McHappy Day’ spot with director Jon Nyquist from Film Graphics.  Jon explains; “we wanted to have the feeling of butterflies, to have each individual word move and have its own personality, to be free and child-like.” While shooting the commercial this  required a more fluid movement from the camera, rather than having it locked off - this ensured a more natural feel in the TVC. In regard to the post experience on this job Jon says; “everyone at Postmodern was really on board and excited by what we wanted to do. Everyone listened and took into consideration the ideas we had, and also contributed to what we wanted to do.” We look forward to working with the lovely Jon and Warwick in the near future!

Reunited with director Lance Kelleher and Curious Films, Postmodern helped create the new motorbike safety spot for TAC (Transport Accident Commission) released this month.


Shot over a grey week in Melbourne for agency Grey Melbourne, this TVC relied on visual effect components to create a seamless transition of dangerous situations that motorbike riders face on the road. Added to the challenge was completing the project within just two weeks.


Postmodern’s visual effects supervisor James Rogers was on board with the project from a pre-visualisation stage, “To take into
consideration what we were going to shoot, how we were going to shoot it, and what physical, ‘real-world’ things we needed to understand before we got onto set”.


James and director Lance Kelleher worked closely together,  testing different camera angles and moves in pre-viz to achieve the most authentic and technically suitable approach. This included the use of the SI2K camera, rig and lenses.  The camera has a removable sensor head, which allowed for a light and flexible lens system which the bike riders could wear for true POV views. The most challenging aspect of creating this TVC was, “making a series of shots join together, especially ones which were not the ‘perfect’ take”, James claims. In post this included a significant amount of re-construction, including creating entirely new frames, matte paintings, 3D buildings and a 3D motorcyclist head replacement.
